America's Most Popular Jobs

We all know that in recent years the economy took a big hit resulting in job scarcity.

Most middle-aged big time business men and women who dominated the corporate world were let go, and struggle to find a new job.

I found this article about America's most popular jobs.

Article- Top American Jobs

The funny thing about the most popular jobs is that most of them only require a high school degree at most.

This is a scary thought as a college student, we are already in debt and we are about to enter a job market where jobs that require a college degree are nowhere to be found.

The only jobs that require higher education on the list are nursing, teachers and managers.

Hmm where does this leave the media students?

All I can say is GOOD LUCK!

Superbowl still an Advertising Powerhouse

In the past decade the Superbowl had been trailing off with its viewers but as of last year it broke the record and had the highest number of viewers ever.

It is no surprise that this year, the advertisment slots for the superbowl have sold out record early.

Fox Network which is airing the superbowl February 6th, 2010, is considering adding extra advertisment time due to the high demand for advertising slots.

I wonder how much the slots are going for this year?

As always we can look forward to Godaddy.com, Budweiser, E-Trade and Pepsi memorable advertisments.

St. John's University's Public Relations Campaign Class Presents:

HOOPER'S THIRD ANNUAL HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE
The class is working to gain skills for educational purposes while helping out the community.
Students are trying to live out the St. John's Vincentian tradition by executing a toy drive to bring smilies to the students in the community.
In November there will be boxes to collect toys all over campus and in the community. The students have been working hard before November selling candy, and baked goods at special events to raise money to buy toys. The class has also comprised a press kit to send to media outlets in hopes of gaining awareness and donations
There is a great need for toys in the NY Metro area.
With the bad economy it is difficult for families to provide toys for their children during the Holidays.  We cannot feed every child but we can help by bringing a smile to children during the holiday season.
We are hoping to raise 1,500 toys this year. This year all toys that are collected will be donated to Bread and Life, Toys for Tots and Shriner's Children Hospital.

Hooper is the face of the campaign. Hooper is Professor Paley's (the Professor leading this class) rescue dog from Katrina. Hooper is caring and lovable, and his is a great image for the campaign.

SEXTING

Sex-Ting- verb
1)The Act of engaging in sexual intercourse via text on a mobile device.
2) The act of sending nude pictures of yourself to another mobile device or uploading the nude pictures to a social media website.

Sexting is an epidemic prevalent among Junior High School and High School Teens and even in rare cases Elementary school babies.

Not only does it provide the offender and victom with social consequences, professional consequences but there is also steep legal consequences for Sexting.

Sexting falls under child pornography laws. Basically a 16 year old girl can send a nude photo of herself to her boyfriend and it can be passed around the school-then she gets arrested for distributing child pornography and now needs to register as a sex offender.

Are YOU Going to Loose Fox Network and News Corp Stations at Midnight?

"Three Strikes and You're Out"

This is the campaign News Corporation has placed against Cablevision. NewsCorp owns many channels such as Fox Broadcasting, My9, FX, HGTV, National Geographic, and Food Network.

Cablevision is about to loose a few News Corp Channels. The channels that are subject to be lost in this agreement are Fox Broadcasting and My9.

Not only is Fox Broadcasting and Cablevision publicly disputing this which could be seen as irresponsible for major media corporations to be doing but they are advertising for the public to go against their opponent. This is known as attack advertising. Attack Advertising is a very sensitive advertising technique because the public may not be favorable to an organization bashing another organization. Usually attack advertising is seen within Politics, and is usually accepted in that advertising realm.

Now we see Attack Advertising with NewsCorp and Cablevision.

News Corp want you to call up Cablevision and complain for those channels. Cablevision wants you to call up NewsCorp and tell them to set fair prices.

Its a Loose-Loose situation for the consumer. Either we will pay more and get the channels, or not receive the channels at all.

Basically, you are only safe if you have DirecTV or Verizon (like me)

Is this fair for Companies to publicly attack each other?

We will see what happens tonight...

TWITTER JOURNALISM

Twitter Journalism; Haiku Journalism: or 140 Characters of Live Reporting....Is this the new medium for News Reporting?

A New York Times Article, reports on the new emergence of Twitter Reporting and how it is an effective news reporting outlet specifically for in the Courtroom.

Usually TV reporting isn't allowed in the courtroom, neither is photography unless the Judge gives permission. This is why we usually see sketches of the courtroom action. Reporters still give reports on what has happened but it was never live until Twitter emerged.

Twitter has don what Television isn't allowed to do in the courtroom. Twitter provides news reporters with an outlet for live coverage. Reporters tweet 140 character messages of what is happening live. The followers follow every tweet, gaining suspense with each tweet they read. As the New York Times article states, "It makes the audience feel like they are there."

The specific case the article refers to is a popular case in Connecticut. This case is about to suspects who are being tried for killing a mother and her two children, the husband is testifying against them. The case was very gruesome, the audience caught every piece of detailed action from the murder scene and courtroom.

Twitter returns to the televsion screen again reporting on this court case. The reporter's feeds were posted live on the Fox's network.

This makes me wonder, now that we are moving away from Print Newspapers, will we find our news on Twitter in a few years, and can it be considered credible?

Online Bullying Turns Fatal

Connecting with the whole world in one second is usually a good communication tool, however, it has its detrimental effects.

Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers University freshman was being spied on by his roomate as he was having a sexual relationship with another male. As if it wasn't bad enough that he was being spied on, the footage was set up as a live feed to the internet.

Once Mr. Clementi found out about his roomates actions, he seeked refuge in a chat room, when eventually the situation got so bad it resulted in his suicide.

Social Media has led to online bullying in recent years. Not only must children and teens face opposition and teasing at school, it is taken to the internet for the world to see, increased harrassment and even more embarassment.

In some situations victoms of online bullying resort to suicide to cure their problems.

It is tragic that this bullying occurs in school, but in college it is unacceptable and an utter disgrace that this student would post a private act online.

Schools and Parents need to reinforce values to children at an early age about how to deal with bullying and social media, before another child is lost.

Pepsi: Refresh or Not?

Everyone has seen the new Pepsi Refresh Project.

This is a pro-bono campaign Pepsi has launched in order to promote that the brand is frequently involved in social responsibility.

On the Pepsi refresh website, people with small non-profit or charitable projects can post their idea on the site to be voted on by others. Each month whichever project that receives the most votes, wins money from Pepsi for their idea. The catch is a small percentage of each Pepsi sold goes to the campaign.

Recently the soft drink brands have been under major pressure from advocacy groups, parents and most of all the government. The issue at hand is that sugary soft drinks are said to be a leading cause of the obesity epidemic across the United States.

What does Obesity have to do with the Pepsi Pro-bono Refresh Project?

ADVOCACY ADVERTISING.

In lieu of the recent drama about obesity being linked to sugary drinks, this could be an attempt to draw attention away from the negative aspects of drinking soda and bringing to light the benefits.

In this case the benefit isn't derived from the actual product, it is a result of the consumer buying the product.

Did Pepsi launch this campaign to be charitable or just to draw attention away from their negative side?

"Two Dimensions Wouldn't Do it Justice."-Honda

AT best an advertisement from a magazine could get a 5 second glance from the consumer, ,just to read over the phrase, or sniff the cologne scent being advertised on the page.

But have you ever heard of an interactive magazine ad?
These types of advertisements are few and far, possibly because their is a decline in creativity among advertisers or the more practical reason, because it is very costly.

In an Issue of Maxim, Honda fused timing, creativity, and the magazine's content to drive an advertisement to appeal to their target market.

This ad literally jumps off the page because it is 3D.

3D is a hot topic due to new technology and popular films being released in 3D and now the emergence of 3D TV.

Honda fused the 3D fad into their Magazine Ad and incorporated it into the Magazine's content.
Honda even gained front page recognition on Maxim for their advertisement which aided the content. "Maxim in 3D presented by, Honda CR-Z sport hybrid"
My boyfriend was flipping through Maxim, and then I saw him pull out a pair of 3D glasses and start putting it together. The glasses were to see the woman who was featured in this issue, Anna Kournikova. After her 3D part, then there is a layout of the new Honda CR-Z also in 3D, because,as Honda states, "Two Dimensions Wouldn't Do it Justice."
This was when my boyfriend started gabbing away about how awesome the car is and how it is his dream car.

Honda has not only created a clever and unique advertisement to sell their new product. They found a way to capture their target audience and grab their attention. It is very difficult to gain that much focus from the consumer in a Magazine ad. With this 3D advertisement, Honda became apart of the experience, and will be remembered for that.

Media Lifeline...

This weekend I thought I would experience a vacation from media, I was actually looking forward to escaping facebook, and all the people trying to reach me. This past weekend my boyfriend and I took a trip four hours upstate to camp in the Adirondacks with some friends and family. We slept in tents, cooked over the fire, and entertained ourselves by talking and hiking. It was a breathtaking outdoor experience, nevertheless, I was ready to head back to civilization. My boyfriend and I drove off towards home ahead of the pack, eager to get home. Little did we know, we were headed in the wrong direction on a path towards doom. Not even ten minutes away from the campsite and we get a flat tire. Normally, you would call somebody, guess what, there is no service in the middle of nowhere! We are on a deserted road, with a flat tire, 4 hours away from home and it still got worse. My boyfriend takes all our luggage out of the trunk only to find my spare donut is also flat. A nice older couple pulls over to the side of the road, and after inquiring about our troubles, he offers to take our flat spare to the nearest gas station (20 miles away), and call our family from a land line. We had to trust this unknown man because we had no other options. Finally he comes back with the spare tire, and we head towards home, after stopping at a dozen Garage stations, we finally reach a mechanic who will fix our tire on a Sunday.
People get flat tires all the time. The situation I found myself in was so traumatic for me because for once I felt totally self-reliant. Even if I had AAA, I wouldn't have been able to contact them. Having a cellular phone means you are connected and safe. We may get annoyed by always being able to be reached, and receiving texts and calls 24/7, however, when there is an emergency there is nothing better than having a cell phone, fully charged, with SERVICE!

Social Media: Changing the Game

A new age of media has awoken. No longer are we just an audience being fed a one-way message from advertisers and giant corporations, the public has become the media generators. The audience has a dual-role as creators and subscribers of media, and every story can be shared with millions within a Milli-second.
To say the phenomena of social media has changed society, would be a huge understatement.

Without social media girls wouldn't be fighting over Justin Beiber, who was discovered by his hits on YouTube, and within weeks became Ushers mini sidekick.

Without social media, arguably Obama wouldn't be our president. His team set the precedent for political social networking. According to MarketingMag.com, "Number of Obama Supporters on Facebook on election day: 3,000,000
Number of McCain supporters on Facebook on election day: 600,000". Not only did Obama use the most popular social media website, he went touch all portals of the web including blogs, his own youtube channel,Flickr, and Twitter when it was in its baby stage. The number of young adults votes were the highest in any election due to the campaign platform of social media. Obama reached his target market by marketing and connecting with the audience on a personal level. His main election success can be attributed to his social networking campaign.

Social Media has allowed for the most interpersonal interaction between brands and their consumers. Now brands must stick by their promise, and when they don't consumers can write nasty reviews all over the web, on the brands web page or even create websites such as, Walmartsucks.com.
Brand to consumer marketing has gotten so personal, when you want to order a pizza, you can make it on your Iphone application, press a few buttons and have it delivered in 30 minutes.

Social Media burst in like a tornado, drastically changing the game, but the question is will it move on fast like a tornado and just be a fad, or last for decades?

The Online Breakup

"We are over, Don't Hate me" scribbled on a post-it...Do you think that is a bad way to get dumped?

Well what about your 500 facebook friends knowing your relationship is over before you even know?

Social media is a great tool to stay in touch with friends and family far away and also network. This tool allows us to share pictures, and status updates. For lovers everybody knows their dates, what they bought each other and they see all the kissy photos. Social media is a great way for lovers to gloat about their ooo soo amazing relationship until the breakup happens...
Step 1) Your relationship isn't really OVER, until you change your facebook status.
Step 2) The main default picture needs to be changed from love and kissy to single sexiness
Step 3) You get support from friends and family, which is helpful but then again THE WHOLE world knows its over, which makes it harder
Step 4) The stalking...Admit it you check who your now ex is making friends with, writing to and what they are doing.

It is so unhealthy.

So no matter how much we use media to show off, it can bite us in the ass at times.

Appifany

Addiction. Junky. Fiend. Crave. Obsession.
How far does your media consumption take you?
Growing up in the emergence of the popularity of the world wide web, when AOL was the only web browser to have and we had to LISTEN to the beeps and buzzes of signing on dial-up, I have spent almost my whole life in front of this familiar screen.

A decade later I find myself in college, immersing myself even more into this new media consumption, and studying the art and science and how this technology influences my chosen career path in the Communications field.

Thus, this blog was born, I decided to do something productive with all this consumption fused with my passion of writing.

Too many thoughts too many ideas, so read and comment if you wish, because I have joined the citizen journalists online..aka BLOGGERS.

From Myspace to facebook to twitter and all the other social media networks that failed in between, social media has become an important aspect of our society.

Are we using social media or is social media using us?
Advertisers were falling off as internet increased in popularity, it happened so fast they needed to abandon the model that allowed prosperity for so long.
Advertisers have taken a bold step to using social media to their advantage and created a brand and personality just as we have.
How many hours a day do we spend on these social media sites? As a college student I know how easy it is to become distracted by a quick facebook chat and not return to my paper for hours.
Social Media is major in MY life, as a communications/media monger.
I am amazed by it, but it can have its downsides, such as bullying increase due to people feel more confident behind the computer screen, scary online dating, bad pictures on the web and TOO much information sharing.

I compare the media relationship to an affair because it is something we cannot resist. We always have that undenying relationship with the media whether we try to escape or embrace it. Media impressions hit us thousands of times a day. Media is held high in our culture but then again what does that really say about our culture?

Like I stated at the top of the blog: Use caution with media consumption.
